My Influences & Mentors
If I had to point my finger at one “thing” for making the biggest difference in my copywriting career, it would have to be John Carlton’s Simple Writing System.
Had I not enrolled in this course, I would not have had the opportunity to mentor directly under Scott Haines. Scott, by the way, mentored under the late and great Gary Halbert for many years… and wrote the only copywriting course with Halbert’s Stamp of Approval: “Shortcut Copywriting Secrets”. It’s off the market now, but if you beg him, he might let one go.
Currently, I’m studying under a “Mystery Mentor”. He prefers to stay “under-the-radar”. He’s gotten his primary client in major media outlets including CNN, WSJ, Fox News, Fox Business, MSNBC and more. “Mystery Mentor” is responsible for the greatest, most significant changes in my life… not just as a copywriter, but as a marketer, a leader, a human being. I am not exaggerating in any way, shape or form. He’s That Powerful. When he “goes public”, I’ll be the first in line to present a video testimonial with a litany of accomplishments attributed to him.
Also, I have subscribed to and unsubscribed myself from over a hundred marketer’s lists, on and off, on and off… but there is ONE man who I have stayed true and constant throughout my career: Perry Marshall. Along the same lines as “Mystery Mentor”, Perry’s teachings are transformative. He’s one of the few marketers out there to really dive deep into the crazy, bat-shit psyche of what makes humans tick. Mr. Marshall is, essentially, a marketing philosopher. You should subscribe to his PRINT newsletter: The Renaissance Club.
Speaking of PRINT newsletters. Every business owner, entrepreneur and marketer should subscribe to Dan Kennedy’s newsletter for at least 8-12 months at one point in their lives: Glazer-Kennedy Inner Circle. I’ve read every single book he’s written, and intend to invest in his courses one at a time until I’ve “competed the set”. Follow any major Internet marketer today, and you will see their roots in none other than Mr. Kennedy.
Finally, in my opinion, if you are a serious student of copywriting that sells, you MUST subscribe to Dan Kennedy’s “Look Over My Shoulder”. It’s available via AWAI if you Google it, or you can contact the publisher Pete Lillo, directly.
